Sedation Dentistry

Welcome to Little Smiles of Washington, where our mission is to deliver top-notch dental care to children of all ages. Visiting the dentist can be intimidating for kids (and parents, too), but at our offices, we're committed to creating a welcoming environment that prioritizes your child's comfort and care. One of the ways we make dental visits stress-free is through sedation dentistry in Greater St. Louis—a safe and effective option to ensure children have a positive experience in the dentist's chair.

With a team of skilled pediatric dentists, including Dr. Jaime Orrick, Dr. Corey Hastings, Dr. Matt Freihofer, and Dr. Carly Boudreaux (Hazelwood location only), we pride ourselves on providing compassionate care and personalized solutions for our young patients.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medications to help patients relax during dental procedures. It’s often called “sleep dentistry,” but that term can be misleading. Patients receiving sedation aren’t usually asleep (except with general anesthesia); they are calm, comfortable, and highly relaxed. At Little Smiles of Washington, we offer sedation techniques that are especially beneficial for children, making their dental experience as easy and anxiety-free as possible.

Sedation is an excellent option when dental treatment might otherwise be challenging due to fear, sensitivity, or medical needs. By creating a calming experience, sedation dentistry helps young patients receive the necessary treatment for healthier smiles.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for Your Child?

If you’ve wondered, “Is sedation dentistry the right choice for my child?” the answer depends on your child’s unique needs and circumstances. Here are some reasons why sedation dentistry might be beneficial for your child:

Sedation can calm children who are nervous or afraid of dental procedures, making the experience less intimidating.

Sedation may benefit children with low pain tolerance or sensitivity, ensuring they remain at ease throughout treatment.

Sedation allows the dentist to work more efficiently while minimizing discomfort during lengthy procedures or treatments that require children to stay still.

Sedation dentistry may be particularly helpful for children with special healthcare needs, as it offers an environment where they feel relaxed and supported.

Unsure if sedation is the best option for your child? Our caring team at Little Smiles of Washington will discuss your child’s medical history, dental anxiety levels, and specific procedures to recommend the most suitable approach.

Types of Sedation Dentistry We Offer

At Little Smiles of Washington, we offer different levels of sedation dentistry to meet the needs of our patients:

Nitrous oxide, often called “laughing gas,” is a mild form of sedation. It’s inhaled through a mask and helps children relax while staying awake. The effects wear off quickly after the procedure. This is a popular option for kids who need minor dental work or feel slightly nervous.

Oral sedation, administered as a liquid or pill, is a moderate sedation option. It helps children remain drowsy and calm during their appointments but still allows them to respond to directions from the dentist.

For certain cases, we may recommend general anesthesia, which ensures the child is fully asleep during the procedure. This is usually used for extensive dental work or for children with significant anxiety or complex medical needs.

What to Expect

Preparing for the Appointment

Before your child’s appointment, our team will give you clear instructions, including whether your child needs to avoid food or drink beforehand. We’ll also review your child’s medical history to ensure safe and effective sedation.

During the Procedure

Once the sedation method is administered, your child will feel calm and at ease. Our team will monitor your child closely throughout the procedure to ensure their safety and comfort.

After the Appointment

Depending on the sedation type, your child may feel groggy or slightly tired afterward. This is completely normal and usually resolves within a few hours. Our team will provide post-procedure care tips to help your child recover quickly and comfortably.
